Which Type of Salt Spray Test is Suitable for Your Product?

Source:LINPIN Time:2025-04-07 Category:Industry News

The salt spray test chamber is an essential testing device for evaluating the corrosion resistance of various materials. Depending on the material or product being tested, key parameters such as temperature, humidity, pH value, and solvent composition may vary. Based on these differences, salt spray tests are categorized into four main types. Below, we provide a detailed explanation of these test methods and their corresponding applications.

1. Neutral Salt Spray Test (NSS Test)
The Neutral Salt Spray (NSS) Test is the earliest and most widely used accelerated corrosion test. It is primarily employed to assess the corrosion resistance of zinc, cadmium protective coatings, or decorative nickel-chromium plating.

Test Conditions:
Salt solution concentration: 5% NaCl
pH range: 6–7 (neutral)
Temperature: 35°C ± 2°C
Relative humidity: >95%

2. Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (AASS Test)
The Acetic Acid Salt Spray (AASS) Test involves adding glacial acetic acid to the neutral salt spray solution, lowering the pH to approximately 3 (acidic). This increases the test’s corrosiveness and accelerates the testing process.

Applications:
Suitable for evaluating copper-nickel-chromium and nickel-chromium plating.
3. Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray Test (CASS Test)
The Copper-Accelerated Acetic Acid Salt Spray (CASS) Test is the most advanced salt spray test method. It incorporates copper chloride (CuCl₂) into the AASS solution and is conducted at 50°C, significantly increasing the corrosion rate.

Applications:
Similar to AASS but provides faster results, ideal for rapid quality control assessments.
4. Cyclic Corrosion Test (Alternate Salt Spray Test)
This is a comprehensive and multi-stage corrosion test that combines neutral salt spray exposure with controlled humidity and drying cycles.

Applications:
Primarily used for hollow mechanical components (e.g., automotive parts, aerospace structures).
Evaluates both internal and external corrosion resistance to ensure functionality after exposure.
Conclusion
Different materials require different types of salt spray tests to ensure accurate and efficient results. As testing demands evolve, new methodologies continue to emerge to meet higher precision and efficiency standards in corrosion resistance evaluation.

What are the functions of the Linpin High-Low Temperature Alternating Humidity and Heat Test Chamber? Under high-temperature conditions, it can test whether different products and materials become softened, whether their efficiency is reduced, or how they behave in high-temperature or humid and hot environments.
An aging test chamber does not refer to a single device but encompasses various testing methods, including xenon lamp aging tests, UV aging tests, high-temperature aging tests, air-exchange aging tests, and salt spray corrosion aging tests.
A constant temperature and humidity test chamber can regulate temperature and humidity according to different testing requirements for products.
If the temperature recovery time falls outside the specified range, it can affect the test results of the thermal shock chamber. To routinely test the temperature recovery time of the equipment, you can follow the steps below.
